Sun Prairie, Wisconsin was started by a Presidential commission from Martin Van Buren in 1837. At that time he formed a party of 45 men, including Augustus A. Bird, to build a capitol for the Territory of Wisconsin in Madison. The group of men left Milwaukee on May 26, 1837, and traveled for days in the rain. On June 9, the group emerged at the edge of the prairie and with the sun shining for the first time in days, carved the words "Sun Prairie" into a tree. Charles Bird, Augustus’s son, returned to the area two years later and became the first settler. (We remember these famous Bird’s with our delicious Bird Street Turkey Sandwich)
A few years later Georgia O'Keeffe was born on November 15, 1887, in a farmhouse near the future site of Beans ‘n Cream Coffeehouse. (Try our Town Hall Salad, Georgia grew up on this road) As a child Georgia O'Keeffe did not care for coffee, but her love of prairie flowers is evident to this day. Beans ‘n Cream Coffeehouse makes reference to this love with their logo; two prairie flowers topped with inverted coffee cups.
Fast forward a few more years and you will find Beans ‘n Cream Coffeehouse founded and going strong in October 2004. Located in the historic downtown area, Beans ‘n Cream serves as the vibrant heart of Sun Prairie. In fact, community is one of the cornerstones of our business. We are locally owned and operated, our employees and owners are invested in Sun Prairie, and as a business we do our best to give back to community charities and organizations.
Our local focus extends to our drinks and foods as well. Our coffees are roasted locally and feature many organic and fair/direct trade choices, our milk and cream comes from Sassy Cow Creamery, found just up the street in Bristol, and most of our breakfast and lunch options are filled with local cheese, meats, and veggies, many of which are organic as well. And let’s not forget ice cream, we get that from Sassy Cow as well!
While community and coffee is very important to us, we like to think that the best thing about Beans ‘n Cream Coffeehouse is you! Not to brag, but we have some of the best customers in the area and we can’t tell you how lucky we are. Wait, you have not visited before? Well, stop on by and join this awesome group of people who make Beans ‘n Cream Coffeehouse great.
See you soon.
